![]() The breakup we saw in Flashes Before Your Eyes was an alternate reality that took place inside the Heart of the Island.Įloise Hawking. If he broke up with Penny in England before he joined the Scots Guard, then why was she writing him letters years later when he was in prison? The answer is that they didn't break up, at least not the same way, in the real world. It's always bothered me that Desmond's timeline doesn't make sense. After he went into the Heart of the Island and failed to fix things with Penny, the Island spat him back up in the middle of the jungle. The same thing happened to Desmond except he also had a flash-sideways experience before that. It's because they went into the Heart of the Island and then were cast out. Now, Eko and Locke were both in the Hatch when it imploded, and the show NEVER provided an explanation as to how either of them ended up randomly in the middle of the jungle after that. This happened to the Man in Black and then to Jack in the last episode. We know from the last season that if you fall into the Heart of the Island, it can spit you up somewhere else on the Island. OK, now, here is the evidence for this theory. And then in the flash-sideways (AKA the Heart of the Island), when he failed to make things right in that version of his life, the Island sent him back to the real world to continue his journey to redemption on the Island. ![]() Which means- DESMOND DIED WHEN HE TURNED THE HATCH FAILSAFE KEY. He had a chance to do things over again, to make things work with Penny, but he screwed it up. He was reliving the experience with Penny when they broke up just as the other survivors relived many things in their lives in season 6's flash-sideways. That's right, he was not in the past, but rather his future, in a world he created. I'm now believing that THAT WAS HIS FIRST TRIP TO THE FLASH-SIDEWAYS. The theory is that in Flashes Before Your Eyes, the season 3 ep that shows what happened to Desmond after the Hatch imploded, the audience assumes that he time traveled to the past. In the LOST universe, the electromagnetism on the Island is basically the same thing as the Heart of the Island- a glowing yellow light from which all of the unique properties of the Island stem. Desmond was blasted with a huge burst of electromagnetism at the end of season 2. Well in season 6, he experiences the flash-sideways, and after that he feels completely content about what will happen on the Island because he knows that there is a future waiting for all of them where life is better. We know that since season 3 he has moved around in time. My reasoning for this is the way that Desmond describes it. In other words, in the LOST universe, not EVERYONE gets an afterlife, or at least not one like that. It is a unique world created from the minds of the Island's inhabitants. I've often believed that the "flash-sideways" (AKA afterlife) in season 6 is actually "inside" the Heart of the Island, so to speak.
